2009 SEC Preview - Jerry Lambert 7/31/2009
SEC College Football Preview by Jerry Lambert
Welcome to another exciting College Football
Season and we here at Great Lakes Sports will give
our predictions for Southeastern Conference and
who we think will win the SEC Title and as always
good luck this season from Great Lakes Sports.
SEC East Division:
Florida- The Gators lost a couple of their skill
position players on offense but they do return
seven starters back on offense and are led by
Heisman Trophy Candidate 6’3” senior Tim Tebow
who threw for 3,286 yards last year with an
amazing 32-6 ratio so scoring points will not be a
problem for the Gators this season. The Florida
Gators also return everyone back on defense as all
eleven starters return, and they only questions we
at Great Lakes Sports is their schedule in the
rugged SEC conference as they have tough road
games with LSU, and Georgia. We will call for the
Florida Gators to win the SEC Title, and end up in
the NCAA Championship game.
Tennessee- The Vols did not play in a bowl game
for the first time in quite a while, as Tennessee had
a mediocre 5-7 record. Now comes in first year
head coach Lane Kiffin who will have a tough task
to not only bring Tennessee to be competitive in
the toughest conference in the country the SEC
conference but bring them back to the national
spotlight once again. The Vols have seven returning
offensive starters, and six starters back on defense,
and we here at Great Lakes Sports look for
Tennessee to take some steps into the positive but
it will be a good year or two before they will be in
position to be playing for the SEC Title, as for now
we will call them to finish in second place in the
rugged SEC East Division.
Georgia- The Bulldogs have fifteen returning
starters back (seven offense & eight defense) from
a solid 10-3 squad last year. The Georgia Bulldogs
have lost their top two players to last year’s NFL
draft in QB Matthew Stafford, and RB Knowshon
Moreno, but the Bulldogs have their top WR coming
back in AJ Green who caught 56 passes for 963
yards (17.2ypc) last year and with a solid defense
this year the Bulldogs will find themselves in the
mix again. We look for the lack of depth on the
offensive side of the ball to be their demise, as for
now we will call foe Georgia to finish in third place
in the SEC East Division with a trip to a New Year’s
Day bowl berth.
South Carolina- This could be a tough season for
the South Carolina as they return only five starters
back on offense and six starters back on defense
from a team that went 7-6 last year. The
Gamecocks lost their top RB in Mike Davis, their QB
Chris Smelley, and their top two WR Kenny
McKinley, and Jared Cook, we look for the
Gamecocks to have trouble scoring points this
season, and with a murderous schedule playing on
the road against Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama,
and with a tough home slate against Mississippi,
Florida, and Clemson we look for a fourth place
finish in the rugged SEC East Division.
Kentucky- The Kentucky Wildcats return seven
starters back on offense, and five starters back on
defense, the Wildcats are led by junior QB Mike
Hartline who threw for 1,666 yards last year. The
Wildcats did have a solid defense last year only
giving up 21ppg last year, but they had trouble
scoring points last year as they averaged only
22ppg last year. We look for the Kentucky Wildcats
to have major problems winning in the division
again this year, and we call the Kentucky Wildcats
to finish in fifth place in the SEC East Division.
Vanderbilt- The Vanderbilt Commodores do return
eight starters back on offense, and nine starters
back on defense from a team that went 7-6 last
year. The Commodores do have a solid defense only
giving up 19ppg last year, but as good as their
defense was their offense is just as bad only scoring
a dismal 19ppg. The Vanderbilt Commodores also
have trough road games against LSU, Florida, and
Tennessee, and we will call for the Vanderbilt
Commodores to finish in last place in the SEC
Division this season.
SEC West Division:
1. Mississippi- This will be Great Lakes Sports
surprise team this year with eight starters back on
offense, and eight starters back on defense from a
team that went a very respectable 9-4 last year
behind first year coach at Mississippi in Houston
Nutt. The Rebels are led by 6’3” junior Jevan Snead
who threw for 2,762 yards with a26-13 ratio, and
with a very easy non-conference schedule this will
be a break out year for the Rebels. We here at Great
Lakes Sports look for the Mississippi Rebels to end
up with ten or eleven wins with the Mississippi
Rebels getting to a New Years Day Bowl Game, as
for now we will call for the Mississippi Rebels to
finish in first place in the SEC West Division, and
going to the SEC Title game.
2. Alabama- The Crimson Tide only has four
starters back on offense, but they do have nine
starters back from a team that went a very solid
12-2 last year. The Tide’s defense which only
allowed a stellar 14 ppg last year will be the
cornerstone of their success this season as they
have a lot of depth on the defensive side of the ball
but with tough games against Virginia Tech, at
Mississippi, LSU, and rival Auburn this could be a
tall order for Alabama, and this is why we look for
Alabama to finish in second place in the SEC West
Division with an outside shot at a BCS bowl berth.
LSU- The LSU Tigers just keeps on reloading
returning seven starters back on offense and seven
starters back on defense from a team that went 8-5
last year. The LSU Tigers are led by senior RB
Charles Scott 1,174 yards with eighteen
touchdowns last year, but with tough games on the
road against Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee we
look for the LSU Tigers to end up with eight or nine
wins, as for now we will call for the LSU Tigers to
end up in third place in the SEC West Division.
Auburn- The Auburn Tigers also have a first year
head coach in Gene Chizik who has seven starters
back on offense, and eight starters back on defense
from a 5-7 squad last year. The Tigers do lack
depth on both sides of the ball, as they only scored
17ppg last year, and with tough games against West
Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, and arch rival
Alabama we look for another five or six wins again
for Auburn, and a fourth place finish in the SEC
West Division.
Mississippi State- The Bulldogs have another first
year head coach in the Southeastern Conference
with Dan Mullen who has a tough task turning a
team that went 4-8 last year. The Mississippi State
Bulldogs return only six starters back on offense
and four starters back on defense, and with the
Bulldogs playing teams like Auburn, LSU, Georgia
Tech, Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi this will be
a very long year for the Mississippi State Bulldogs
with only three or four wins again this season. We
look for the Mississippi State Bulldogs to finish in
last place in the rugged SEC West Division.
This is Great Lakes Sports SEC College
Football Preview for the 2009-2010 seasons, and
good luck this up coming Football season.
